An international company will cut 65 employees from its Richmond-area office, according to a notice the firm filed with the state.
Acision, which provides messaging services to mobile communications companies, notified affected employees Friday, it said in filings made with the Virginia Workforce Network’s Rapid Response program.
The job cuts are “expected to be permanent” and are effective beginning Sept. 9, the company said in a letter to the state.
In an emailed statement, an Acision spokesperson said the downsizing in Richmond staff is due to “realignment.”
“As a leading provider of mobile messaging and communication services, Acision is re-aligning its product portfolio as part of its ongoing strategy evolution, and in response to changing customer requirements and market dynamics,” the statement said. “We regret that as a result of this re-alignment, we will be downsizing our Richmond team to allow the company to prioritize its focus on the development of newer products.”
The U.K.-based company’s Richmond operations are located at Deep Run III, the former Circuit City headquarters building on Mayland Drive. Acision leased 16,472 square feet of office space there in July 2013.
Most of the affected employees work in the company’s research and development department, its state filing said. Twenty are software engineers. Three employees in the company’s information and communication technology and marketing departments are also being let go.
