A local coffee seller is getting more room to roast.

Black Hand Coffee Co., which has operated in the Museum District for more than two years, is adding 1,000 square feet of warehouse space in Scott’s Addition.

Owner Clay Gilbert said the facility at 3103 W. Leigh St. will be used to roast, package and store Black Hand products.

“With the growth of our wholesale, we just can’t do it all under one roof,” Gilbert said. “The proximity to my retail spot and the highways is nice.”

Black Hand’s popular single-serve pods are pushing the expansion.

Gilbert moved Black Hand to 3101 Patterson Ave. in 2012. That space has functioned as a cafe and production space. Gilbert plans to move into the new space in January and expects to hire two or three more employees to help with operations there.

Some of the growth of Black Hand’s wholesale is fueled by its line of single-serve coffee cups used in Keurig and other personal coffee makers. This year, Black Hand produced 24,000 single-serve cups and has sold them all, Gilbert said. The cups are sold at Ellwood Thompson’s, Southern Season and Black Hand’s storefront on Patterson.

The company ordered 33,000 more of the cups in September. They come in only one coffee variety, Costa Rican, but Gilbert is working on adding a Sumatra batch. A box of 12 single-serve Black Hand cups retails for about $12, Gilbert said.

“They seem to be doing well when they’re placed in a market,” he said.

Beyond the added space Scott’s Addition, Gilbert has other ideas percolating for future expansion.

“The next step would hopefully be to get a second retail location,” Gilbert said.
