A grocery chain is picking up in Chesterfield County where a book store giant left off.
The Fresh Market is preparing to settle into the Commonwealth Center in Midlothian at Hull Street Road and Route 288, the Greensboro, North Carolina-based company announced Wednesday.
It has leased a 23,350-square-foot space that was left vacant by Barnes & Noble at the end of last year.
The store, at 4600 Commonwealth Centre Parkway, should open in late fall or early winter, according to DDR Corp., the Ohio real estate investment firm that owns and manages the Commonwealth Center.
This location will be Fresh Market’s 14th store in Virginia, fourth in the Richmond area and second in Chesterfield County. It already operates a store at 1200 Huguenot Road, about 20 minutes from the Commonwealth Center.
It’s most recent opening was in Carytown in 2013.
A representative with Fresh Market did not return requests for comment by press time. The company’s announcement was first reported by the Times-Dispatch.
DDR plans to make several upgrades to the former bookstore building.
The building’s exterior will be renovated, with some additional landscaping added to the outside. Interior changes will include putting in new flooring and roofing, as well as adding grocery store necessities.
Construction should begin this spring. DDR declined to say what contractors the company will hire to do the upgrades.
With the additional tenant, the 13-year-old, 165,300-square-foot Commonwealth Center is now fully leased. Other tenants include Stein Mart, Michaels, Old Navy, Ulta and Pier 1 Imports.
DDR purchased the 22-acre Commonwealth Center in 2007 for $31.9 million, according to county records.
The Fresh Market was founded in North Carolina in 1982. It currently operates 170 stores in 28 states across the country.
