Earth is being moved along a visible portion of Huguenot Road for an out-of-town firm’s first senior living facility in the Richmond market.
Site work started about a month ago on a 37,000-square-foot Bickford Senior Living facility at 11200 W. Huguenot Road, at the intersection of Huguenot and Big Oak Lane.
The Kansas-based company is building a 60-bed facility there. It had proposed a similar project on 7½ acres off Ridgefield Green Drive between John Rolfe and Ridgefield parkways in Henrico County, but after several deferrals by the county’s review boards, Bickford withdrew its rezoning request in June.
The Chesterfield County facility is being built on 4½ acres that was rezoned for urban single-family residential use. Bickford purchased the property July 16 for $1.52 million, according to county records.
KBS is the contractor and is aiming for completion about a year from now, said Steve Satterfield, vice president of preconstruction services.
Kansas-based architecture firm Kazmaier & Associates is designing the building.
Bickford Assisted Living operates about 50 similar centers throughout the country. The Chesterfield facility would be its first in Virginia, and the company is eyeing locations in Fredericksburg and Suffolk. It will have 16 rooms dedicated to residents with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
Bickford is one of several companies looking to capture a share of the senior living and group care facility market in Chesterfield. Among them, Washington, D.C.-based Holladay Corp. is working to redevelop the former Brandermill Inn and Conference Center site into a group care facility. The Memory Center recently opened at CenterPointe. And HHHunt is building a $12.5 million freestanding facility in Midlothian that will likewise cater to residents with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

How many stories will this building be?
Who approved this? (and proximity to Huguenot Road)
4.5 Acres is almost 200,000 Sq. Ft of land, the building is 37,000 sq ft.
It could be only one story and still fit with room to spare. It may be 2-3 stories, with more outdoor space as a result.
