The churn of the Richmond salon industry continues as a local chain has sold off a location to a long-tenured employee, bringing with it a new brand to Church Hill.

Blackbird Salon’s location at 402 N. 25th St. is now under new ownership and has rebranded to Luminary Hair Co.

Carly Moenich, who has worked for Blackbird since 2011 and managed the Church Hill location since it opened in January 2016, is the new owner.

Shortly after the one-year anniversary of the 25th Street store, Moenich said, she began discussions with Blackbird owner Catherine Roller Tyrell about a deal. They closed the transaction in April for undisclosed terms.

“It’s been the dream to own my own salon. I don’t know if I ever thought I would, but the opportunity came,” Moenich said. “It was just a mutual feeling that I was ready to take on more responsibility, and (Tyrell) wanted to step back and not have to run all over town.”

Tyrell is still the owner of Blackbird’s locations at 111 N. Lombardy St. and 1008 Lafayette St., which remain open.

Three of four staff at Luminary are rollovers from the Blackbird days.

“Operationally, things haven’t changed too much,” Moenich said. “We redid the pricing structure so that now it’s not (priced by) gender, but by length of hair.”

She added that she plans to add more staff in coming months.

Attorney Chris Way of Way Law represented Moenich in the deal. Local designer Deanna Hamad crafted Luminary’s logo. Its storefront signage was done by Ross Trimmer of Sure Hand Signs, who also decorated the windows of Civilization Tattoo, a new parlor in Jackson Ward.

Richmond’s locally owned salon scene has seen plenty of action this summer. Honeysuckle & the Opal opened in the Fan at the former Rest In Pieces space, while Mango Salon signed on for a fourth location at GreenGate in Short Pump.

Meanwhile, Act I Hair Design in Forest Hill closed after more than 40 years in business.
