After missing out on a chance to be part of a Diamond District development team, Richmond’s largest hotelier has found a way to get in on the action in the neighborhood.
After a long time percolating, Starbucks is now serving up coffee in a new West End location in a renovated former bank branch.
The third-party review represents the first accounting of the aborted Public Safety Building project that has ended up costing the health system at least $80 million, including a $73 million project-exit payment.

A five-story, 103,000-square-foot building fronting Libbie Avenue will feature office space, to be mostly occupied by Bon Secours, as well as apartments. It would be the final phase of an overall reinvention of the Westhampton School that took many turns over the past decade.
As traditional industrial districts like Scott’s Addition and the Westwood area continue to transform into predominantly mixed-use residential neighborhoods, the developer is betting there’s still a need for industrial space outside the city.
“It’s been nerve-wracking to say the least, but you know, if it was easy anybody could do it,” co-owner Butch Taylor said of the six-year process to open the brewery. “We’re building something that we want to be proud of and the community to be proud of … I get choked up just thinking about it.”
