After nearly two years of regulatory wrangling to try to build a medical campus on a large site near Ashland, HCA appears to be moving on.

Bon Secours, VCU Health and HCA are all eyeing projects to add more beds to hospitals in the Richmond area, including 40 in Chesterfield and nearly 90 in the city.

“A third of our patients come from more than 60 miles away. That’s significant, and a reason why we’re committed to the expansion of the beds,” CEO Alan Lombardo said of the hospital expansion.

The health system hopes to open the $16 million, nearly 11,000-square-foot emergency center at 9630 Iron Bridge Road in 2026.

After mixed success in securing state approvals for a planned Hanover hospital campus in the past year, HCA remains undeterred in trying to get the property rezoned.

National rehab hospital operator Encompass Health wants to increase the bed count at its Henrico-based facility at 5700 Fitzhugh Ave.

The health system and community college recently rolled out the program at HCA’s Chippenham Hospital, where Brightpoint leases a space with X-ray labs, classrooms and faculty offices.

The company described the move as a “mass layoff of its sales representatives and related employees across the country,” according to a filing with the state.

GameDay locations feature flat-screen TVs set to sports programming, leather seating, sports decor and refreshments, which are measures intended to make them more inviting to men compared to a doctor’s office.

Its offices at the St. Francis Medical Center and Johnston-Willis Hospital campuses will close and reopen at the newly built, 77,000-square-foot newly built facility at 15300 East West Road.
