With the new space comes a pivot away from textbook sales for the nearly 40-year-old business and greater emphasis on VCU apparel, university merchandise and school supplies as it searches for better margins.
The new store would be the seventh Stella’s Grocery location of the chain in the region. It’s taking over a former Starbucks left empty when the coffee shop moved across the street.
“Instead of expanding on the retail side of things, because retail prices for rent are just kind of absurdly expensive, we decided to look into a warehouse space,” said Reefology RVA owner Caleb Kilgore said.
“What I’ve tried to focus on is music reproduction in a home, in a real environment. Brands that satisfy the audiophile,” Tim Mullins said of his new shop.
Not to be outdone by the ongoing Richmond-area expansions of competitors Wawa and Sheetz, Royal Farms has found the site for its next local store.
The other Kultivate outpost at 13140 Midlothian Turnpike in Chesterfield remains operational, as does owner Evan Somogyi’s four Kulture head shops.
The bakery, which will have a gothic theme, is taking over the former Anthony’s on the Hill pizza parlor on East Broad.
The German grocer is closing its store in the GreenGate development. It’ll be the second grocery store in the region to close this month, joining the Walmart Neighborhood Market in Northside.
Travis Hamilton’s second act, a furniture store called Curated Furnishings, will open this fall in Goochland County.
