Markel Corp. Chairman and CEO Alan Kirshner will receive medical treatment during December and January and might be absent from the company’s offices during that time, the company said in a brief news release Monday.
Markel did not give any specifics about the nature of the treatment.
In a prepared statement, Kirshner said:
“I am confident that the business will be in good hands with the oversight of the other members of the Office of the Chairman, Steve Markel and Tony Markel, and the leadership of our Presidents Mike Crowley, Tom Gayner and Richie Whitt. I look forward to returning to the office by February and resuming my day-to-day duties.”
Kirshner, who is in his mid-70s, has been Markel’s chairman and chief executive since it went public in 1986 and has been with company since 1960.
