One thing isn’t taking off at RIC: Prices

airplaneIn the midst of a push by certain regional leaders to “Save Low Fares” at Richmond International Airport, rankings released Thursday show just where RIC stands in terms of fares when compared with its national peers.

Richmond ranked 47th out of the Top 100 airports in the United States for the average domestic fare in the third quarter 2010, according to research released from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, part of the federal Research and Innovative Technology Administration.

The average domestic fare at RIC during the third quarter of 2010 was $339.68. That’s up 9.46 percent compared with third quarter 2009.

But it was right in line with the national average of $339.71. The average increase nationally between third quarter 2010 and third quarter 2009 was 10.67 percent.

The numbers also show how far fares at RIC have come down in the past decade. The average daily fare at RIC dropped by 25.87 percent between third quarter 2000 and third quarter 2010. The average fare in Richmond in 2000 was $458.24.

It could be a lot better if the discount carriers had more presence. My family of 5 is flying out of Baltimore for spring break because Southwest Airlines was cheaper and had a better schedule. It’s probably very tough to measure how many Richmond departures are “lost” to competition from other airports, but I’m sure it’s significant.
