Winter auto sales getting warmer

cardealershipThe road to recovery for local auto dealers continued in January, according to the latest figures from Virginia Automobile Dealers Association.

The VADA reported 2,677 new vehicle registrations in January in Chesterfield County, Henrico County, Hanover County and Richmond City combined. That’s up about 4 percent from 2,571 new vehicles registered in January 2010 and up 21 percent compared with January 2009.

These figures follow a promising 2010 year-end report from the VADA that showed just over 30,000 new cars and trucks were registered in the region’s four main localities last year, up about 1,000 vehicles compared with the doldrums of 2009.

As usual, domestics were far outsold by imports across the board. Hanover, Henrico and Richmond all saw rising levels of new vehicle registrations during the first month of the year compared with last year. However Chesterfield saw its total decline.

Here is a breakdown of the numbers for the four major localities in the Richmond region:

January 2011 total new vehicle registration = 2,677

Chesterfield – 219 domestics, 544 imports, 122 trucks = 885

Hanover – 100 domestics, 172 imports, 73 trucks = 345

Henrico – 219 domestics, 567 imports, 79 trucks = 865

Richmond – 262 domestics, 265 imports, 55 trucks = 582

January 2010 = 2,571

Chesterfield – 302 domestics, 567 imports, 105 trucks = 974

Hanover – 95 domestics, 155 imports, 50 trucks = 300

Henrico – 216 domestics, 540 imports, 82 trucks = 838

Richmond – 128 domestics, 292 imports, 39 trucks = 459

January 2009 = 2,198

Chesterfield – 294 domestics, 425 imports, 115 trucks = 834

Hanover – 71 domestics, 134 imports, 81 trucks = 286

Henrico – 205 domestics, 443 imports, 93 trucks = 741
