The University of Virginia’s law school is the top-ranked law school in the state and the ninth-best law school in the nation, according to the U.S. News & World Report.
Three others in Virginia, the College of William & Mary, Washington and Lee University and George Mason University, all saw their law schools ranked in the Top 50 in nation.
The University of Richmond came in at No. 67.
The list ranks law schools based on assessments from peers and the legal community, median LSAT scores, undergrad GPAs, bar passage and placement success for graduates.
At No. 9, UVA’s law school has 1,105 students and charges in-state students $42,500 per year and out-of-state students $47,500 per year, according to the rankings. Ninety-seven percent of its graduates land jobs before they graduate, with a median starting salary of $160,000 in the private sector and $58,000 in the public sector.
William & Mary was ranked No. 27. It has 628 students who pay $23,800 for in-state tuition and $33,800 for out-of-state tuition. About 84 percent of its graduates land jobs before graduation.
Washington and Lee came in at No. 30. It has 407 students, charges $39,937 in tuition and sees 79.7 percent of its graduates employed by the time they graduate — close to a fifth land jobs in Washington, according to the report.
George Mason held the No. 40 spot. It has 505 students at its law school, 86.5 percent of whom are employed upon graduating.
At No. 67, UR’s law school has 452 students, about 60 percent of whom are employed upon graduating, the report showed. UR charges $34,070 in tuition, and its graduates make a median starting salary of $100,000 in the private sector and $52,000 in the public sector.
The rankings of the state’s other law schools — Appalachian School of Law, Liberty University and Regent University – were not published because they ranked below the U.S. News cutoff.
The top three law schools in the country according to the list were Yale, Harvard and Stanford.
