A high-end steak and lobster house in Short Pump has closed.
The Copper Grill Lobster & Steakhouse at Short Pump Town Center mall served its last New York strip Aug. 22.
Pam Howland, marketing director for the mall, confirmed the restaurant was closed.
“They decided to leave after being here for eight years and to return to their home market in Kansas City,” Howland said.
The restaurant ran a deal on Groupon in May for $50 worth of food for $25 and sold 1,243 vouchers. The Groupon was originally set to expire Nov. 9 but was changed to the closing date about a month ago.
The restaurant’s website is still up, and the voice mail still says it’s open for dinner.
The Copper Grill was known for its steak, seafood and lengthy dessert menu. The business had locations in Alabama and Florida.
In June 2007, the Richmond and Alabama locations were sold to Haddad Restaurant Group, the owners of Plaza III Steakhouse, an upscale chain based in Kansas City.
The Alabama location was reopened as Plaza III Steakhouse, and the Florida location was sold to another buyer.
There has been no word on whether the Richmond location will be turned into a Plaza III Steakhouse.
Besides the Copper Grill closing, Osteria La Giara, an Italian restaurant near the mall in the Towne Center West development, closed in June after a six-month run.
A few other businesses have recently opened in and around the outside mall on West Broad Street.
Flip Flop Shops opened recently inside the mall, and McAlister’s Deli also recently opened just up the road at 11530 W. Broad St.

Groupon kills. It is a last chance, need money, losing kind of strategy. If you adopt a discount price strategy that tells us all you have no value.
I disagree about groupon, I challenge you to tell me another way to get that kind of exposure for that small a price. Its a fantastic way to bring in new regular customers. You do however have to have good food that’s a good value on a regular day too.
