A 30-year-old local company has found a buyer – and a shot of youth.
Cottrell Communications, a Henrico telecommunications firm, was acquired this month by Epitome Networks, a technology services company founded in Richmond in 2009.
Financial specifics of the transaction were not disclosed.
Epitome president and Richmond native John Street said the deal brings together his company’s expertise in networking and other services with Cottrell’s experience in selling and installing products such as business phone systems.
“We focus on network and technology services, and it was a really good fit for us to continue to grow the telecom side of our operation,” Street said.
Both the Epitome name and the Cottrell Communications brand will remain for now, Street said.
“The Cottrell name is too valuable in this market to do anything different any time soon,” he said.
The companies will consolidate offices over the next year and will share the Epitome headquarters on Mayland Drive.
Cottrell still has its office on Impala Drive, not far from the Staples Mill Amtrak station.
Preston Cottrell, also a Richmond native, started the company that bears his name in 1983.
“We come to John [Street] with a great foundation,” Cottrell said. “We felt like we had the need to enhance what we were doing.
“And I’m getting a little older, and I need to be associated with some youth.”
Cottrell, 63, said he would stay on with the company and act as a liaison to maintain client relationships.
Some redundant positions will likely be eliminated over time, but the combined company will have more than 40 employees, Street said.
