A Broad Street bicycle shop will soon close its doors for good.

Pibby’s Bicycle and Skate at 209 W. Broad St. ceased normal operations July 5, according to a note taped in the shop’s window.

Owner Chip Atkins opened the shop in Carver in 2006. The business moved to its Monroe Ward location on Broad Street in January 2011. Atkins announced in June his plans to close by the end of summer.

“There are many factors influencing this decision,” Atkins wrote on the company’s Facebook page. “It is … one that has been reached with a great deal of deliberation and thought.”

A liquidation sale is scheduled from July 29 to Aug. 3.

Requests for comment from Atkins were not returned by press time.

Other local bike shops are on the move this summer. Bunnyhop Bike Shop is working on its new Oregon Hill space at 349 S. Laurel St. Cyclus Bicycle Shop in Church Hill is also looking for a new location when its lease ends in August, according to owner Brett Eastman.

In April, Conte’s Bike Shop opened a Carytown location directly across the street from Carytown Bicycle Co. and Agee’s Bicycles.
