Construction is underway at an $11.5 million apartment building aimed at Virginia Union University students.

Tractors are humming on Brook Road at the site of a planned 103-unit student housing project. Developer Willie Lanier Jr., acting as Lombardy VU Realty LLC, in September bought the 3.2-acre parcel directly across from Virginia Union football field for $1 million.

The building was the second development Lanier proposed for a VUU area apartment complex. He scrapped plans in 2012 for a $5 million, 33-unit project on Lombardy Street before setting the current development in motion.

Lanier plans to complete the project in time for the 2014-15 school year. Units will range from studios to three-bedroom apartments. The building will be marketed primarily to college students but will be open to the general public.

Baltimore-based Grant Architects designed the Brook Road development, and Richmond-based Branch & Associates is the general contractor.
