After spending half a century downtown, a retailer is moving its operations to the West End and freeing up more space on East Grace Street.
Uniform City, a medical wear and supplies retailer, is closing its three-story, 5,100-square-foot store at 402 E. Grace St. on Oct. 3 and will reopen Oct. 6 in a 3,000-square-foot shop at 7518 W. Broad St. in Merchants Walk Shopping Center.
The St. Louis-based retailer has operated on Grace Street for 50 years, a store employee said.
Uniform City has 12 retail locations in Georgia, Florida, Maryland and Virginia and is a division of Scrubs & Beyond, according to its website.
Washington, D.C.-based Douglas Development Corp. owns the property through Jemals 402 Grace LLC, according to city records. Douglas Development would not comment on the property.
Uniform City’s move west coincides with a recent influx of restaurants onto that stretch of Grace Street.
Julep’s has plans to move from its location in Shockoe Bottom to 430 E. Grace St. in the Shield’s Shoe building. And Perly’s reopened this month at 111 E. Grace St.
Brett McNamee, a broker with Divaris Real Estate, is handling the listing of 402 E. Grace St. She said she’s looking to target a restaurant or a retailer for the space.
“We’re hoping we’ll be able to get a good urban retailer or one of the fine restaurants,” McNamee said. “We’re being flexible with the rates.”
