Guided by one of Richmond’s most established coffee brands, a new cafe is opening as the latest tenant in a changing West End shopping center.
ShoreDog Coffee and Cafe plans to open in October in the Tuckahoe Shopping Center.
ShoreDog owners Gibbs and Sharon Moody have leased the 2,500-square-foot space at 434-B N. Ridge Road, which has previously been home to a beauty salon, a bakery and a pharmacy.
The husband-and-wife team, who live nearby, will sell breakfast items, freshly made pastries, paninis, salads and ice cream. The cafe will have a full espresso bar and serve coffee from Lamplighter Roasting Co.
Gibbs Moody said ShoreDog will look to fill a gap in the nearby area’s food offerings.
“The whole area has been going through a re-gentrification process with young families and walking traffic, and no ice cream or coffee to speak of,” he said. “It lacks a breakfast place and a place for families to go have a good healthy salad for lunch.”
While ShoreDog is hoping to scoop up the breakfast crowd, there are plenty of restaurants nearby. ShoreDog will open next to Private Stock Cigar & Wine Co., which also serves sandwiches, and a new burger concept called The Backyard Grill is set to open this month on ShoreDog’s other side.
There’s also Angela’s Ristorante & Pizzeria, Bernie’s Subs & Pizza and the recently opened Kuba Kuba Dos in ShoreDog’s vicinity.
Broker Barry Hofheimer of CBRE|Richmond represented the landlord in the leasing of the space.
The Moodys will look to set their venture apart by tapping into recent food trends.
“One thing we’re trying to do is play upon the theme of local and sustainable and organic,” Moody said. “Coffee shops need a vibe to go along with them. In the West End, that will be important.”
To help capture that vibe, the Moodys are enlisting the services of Lamplighter. In addition to providing ShoreDog its coffee beans, Lamplighter will also be helping with layout and operations.
“We’re deferring to Lamplighter in a lot of the decisions we will make,” Moody said. “We’re asking for their advice – we can accept or choose to do something different, but we are very appreciative of the success they have had.”
Lamplighter has two cafes in the Fan and one in Scott’s Addition, where it also has its roasting operation. The partnership with ShoreDog is intended to help expand Lamplighter’s presence, Moody said.
“In return for their help, I become a user of their product, and I help expand their presence to the West End of Richmond,” he said.
Moody, who has a background in investment banking, will work at ShoreDog full-time. It’s his first food-related work since his college days. Sharon Moody co-owns the home and furniture store Fraiche in the Libbie-Grove area, where she will continue to spend most of her time.
“I’m just trying to find interesting things to do at this stage in my career,” Gibbs Moody said.
As for the possibility of other ShoreDogs in the future, Moody said they’ll stick with one, for now.
“You have to prove the concept,” he said. “We’re not going into it with the idea that there would be offspring, but I certainly wouldn’t rule it out.”
