A local developer’s goal of raising enough money to make a $1 million donation to the VCU Massey Cancer Center was realized with this year’s Massey Street of Hope.

The showcase of eight new homes on a street in East West Communities’ Hallsley development raised more than $675,000 from sponsorships, ticket sales, special events and the sale of one of the houses – Perkinson Homes’ Home of Hope, which sold for $635,000, $200,000 of which was put toward the Massey donation.

Combined with a 50 percent matching grant of $337,500 from the Mary Morton Parsons Foundation, the event reached its goal of $1 million for the VCU Massey Cancer Center, which was the designated recipient when the event was first held in 2013, raising $100,000 that year.

Started by George Emerson of Emerson Builders, the event was adopted by East West Communities, which added a zero to the fundraising goal and hosted the second showcase over several weekends in September.

Participating builders were Biringer Builders, Falcone Custom Homes, Homesmith Construction, Main Street Homes, Ray Williams Custom Homes and Youngblood Properties, as well as Perkinson Homes, which built two of the eight homes.
