CarMax will have some more elbow room when it sets up its new downtown space this summer.
The used car retail giant has added 6,000 square feet to the 26,000 it leased back in February in the Lady Byrd Hat factory building at 140 Virginia St.
The company confirmed the additional space but could not provide additional details last week as to which space it is in the building or how it would be used, other than as part of its previously announced new digital and technology innovation center.
Fulton Hill Properties, which renovated and leases the historic building along Richmond’s Canal Walk, would not confirm the square footage or provide additional details Friday. COO Jon Ondrak said he would need to consult with CarMax first and could not do so that day.
Earlier in the week, when asked about the additional lease, Ondrak declined to comment, stating only it is Fulton Hill’s policy not to discuss leasing activity or rates at its properties.
An upper-floor space in the building recently became available when media firm Spurrier Group relocated to 101 S. 15th St., another Fulton Hill property a few blocks away. Remaining tenants at Lady Byrd include Off the Hookah, Roseline Financial Group and law firm Butler Royals.
CarMax spokeswoman Catherine Gryp said the 6,000 square feet would add to the company’s new digital and technology innovation center, which will focus on building out the company’s e-commerce capabilities.
She said the space is currently being outfitted for CarMax and is slated to open by early summer. She said the company continues to hire for new positions for the center, which was initially planned to house between 80 and 120 employees.
The 26,000-square-foot space leased in February spans two floors and a mezzanine level. It previously housed the music venue Toad’s Place.
The company worked with Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer in its downtown search that led to the space.
The move marks the company’s first foray downtown after decades in the suburbs. It remains headquartered in a 250,000-square-foot complex in the West Creek office park in Goochland, where it moved its corporate offices in 2005. The 130-acre site houses just over 1,000 employees.
