BizSense: The New Class

New Class

New faces abound at Richmond BizSense.

We’ve added three new employees to our Richmond news operation this month, beefing up the quality and quantity of the valuable local business news you’ve come to expect from us over the past nine years.

First, we’re proud to have lured veteran reporter Jamaal O’Neal over from the Daily Press, where he covered commercial real estate on the Peninsula. He’s also had stints at the Greater Wilmington Business Journal in Wilmington, North Carolina, and cut his teeth at several small newspapers around Texas.

A native of the Lone Star State, Jamaal graduated from the University of North Texas. Fun fact about Jamaal: he didn’t start talking until he was 6 and he says he hasn’t stopped since.

At BizSense, Jamaal is covering startups, restaurants, breweries, healthcare and nonprofits.

In from Missouri, Mike Shaw is our latest summer reporter. He’s a St. Louis native and graduated in 2015 with a journalism degree from the University of Missouri, where he’s currently pursuing a second bachelor’s in economics.

Mike is a tennis player and pianist, but couldn’t fit his keyboard in the car for the 14-hour drive from Missouri to Richmond. He did bring his tennis racket, if you’re game.

On the side of news that you don’t see, we’ve added Kieran McQuilkin as our web editor.

Kieran hails from New Canaan, Connecticut, and graduated in May from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, where he played goalkeeper for the school’s soccer team. He managed to fit in a quick trip to Alaska in the few weeks between the time he graduated and the day he started at BizSense, during which he flew over the biggest active glacier in the northern hemisphere.

As web editor, Kieran is the keeper of our site, tasked with making sure every element is sharp, from photos to headlines. He’s our last line of defense for keeping our grammar and fact-checking up to snuff.

Loyal BizSense readers: please welcome Jamaal, Mike and Kieran to Richmond. They’re hustling hard to build contacts around town, so feel free to drop them a line – and a news tip or two.

Jamaal can be reached at [email protected].

Mike is [email protected].

And Kieran is [email protected].
