A national gym brand known for its all-nighters is pushing out another rep in Henrico.
A new franchise for Anytime Fitness, which operates gyms that stay open 24 hours a day, has signed a lease for 4,600 square feet at 3049 Lauderdale Drive in the Lauderdale Square shopping center.
It will be the brand’s sixth spot in the Richmond area and will sit about four miles from another Anytime Fitness location in the Tuckahoe Village Shopping Center off Patterson Avenue.
Jessica Jenkins, owner of the Lauderdale Square franchise, said the company is often keen on putting gyms near each other.
“The idea isn’t to compete with another one. Our members can go to any location they want,” said Jenkins, who does not own another local Anytime franchise.
The brand’s gyms are staffed for about nine hours each day, but members can access any of its locations at all hours with a keycard.
While other national chains seek out huge boxes for their floors, Anytime has a different approach, Jenkins said.
“Anytime Fitness gyms are known for being a little bit smaller. It’s more personal,” she said. “We’re actually one of the bigger locations.”
A Maryland native, Jenkins graduated from Salisbury University with a degree in business management. She previously ran the aerobics department of a gym in Maryland and is a certified personal trainer.
Tupos Construction Co. will begin renovations on the space next month, and Jenkins is targeting a September 2017 open.
Anytime was founded in 2002 and has over 3,000 locations globally. Its franchisees pay an upfront $37,500 franchise fee and $549 monthly to the company, according to its website.
Elsewhere in the local fitness market, a smaller gym studio opened recently in a former Nesbit salon space in the Fan.
