A longtime player in the Henrico fitness scene is under new ownership after passing from one couple to another.
Phyzique Fitness and Wellness Club, a personal training gym near Innsbrook, was sold last week to Kandes Wirt and Robert Green. They bought the business from Jay and Keith Janssen, who opened Physique in 2004.
The deal closed June 1. Wirt did not disclose details of the transaction.
The private, appointment-only fitness center occupies 4,100 square feet at 3963 Deep Rock Road in the Deep Run Centre shopping center, near the intersection of Broad Street and Gaskins Road.
Phyzique features a small yoga studio, massage room and full weight room. Wirt and Green, Louisa natives, will initially run the gym with two personal trainers. Sessions typically range from $50 to $65.
The Janssen’s were interested in selling Phyzique because they’re relocating to Florida, where Wirt said they plan to open a similar facility.
Wirt became interested in fitness after graduating from Randolph-Macon College, when she set out to lose the “freshman 15 and then some,” she joked. After getting into shape, she began training friends, and her efforts snowballed from there.
“We had a home gym and all our friends wanted to come over,” Wirt said. “Robert and I looked at each other and said, ‘We’re training these people.’”
Phyzique is the engaged couple’s first endeavor as business owners. Wirt previously worked in IT in Richmond, and Green in asset protection for Walmart.
Wirt said they plan to operate Phyzique similarly to previous owners, but with at least one addition to the business model.
“We’re planning to add physical therapy as a service sometime in the next few months,” she said.
Earlier this month, another veteran local fitness studio came under new ownership. Bikram Yoga Richmond was sold to a trio of yogis in a deal that closed June 1. Bikram has two locations in the area – at Stony Point and in the West End.
