After three years running a popular pop-up, a local bagel maker has opened his brick-and-mortar shop in the Fan.
Nate’s Bagels opened Wednesday at 21 S. Allen Ave.
Namesake and owner Nate Mathews had been running the business as a pop-up around town the last few years before leasing the 1,400-square-foot space on the corner of West Cary and South Allen streets.
Nate’s Bagels are made from scratch in the shop, and are available in a variety of sandwich options, including a Bagel Bahn Mi and a pastrami and pork roll sandwich. Nate’s menu also has some salad and soup options.
Beyond bagels, the shop also bakes pastries like black-and-white cookies, scones and pound cake. It is also outfitted with a full espresso bar, serving Blanchard’s Coffee for hot drinks and Ironclad Coffee Roasters cold brew coffee.
The shop is primarily a grab-and-go spot with seating for about 12. Mathews, whose background is in engineering, said he did some of the renovations to the space himself, which was formerly an appliance repair shop.
He opens with a staff of about 12, with plans to add more workers over time. Initial hours will be from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday to Friday and on weekends from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In mid-June, the shop will switch to 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.

I hope this location will add to the improvements and dining options along Cary Street in this corridor (Robinson to Meadow) that still needs work but is improving every day. Fancy Biscuit for breakfast and then to Nate’s for lunch. Looking forward to trying one of their bagel sandwiches.
