A wealth advisory firm from UVA country has made a push into the local market.
Patina Wealth, which was founded two years ago in Charlottesville, last month opened an office in Richmond.
The firm has taken up residence in the Gather coworking space in Scott’s Addition, with John Mumper manning it and joining founder Sam Harris, a former Richmonder and Virginia Tech grad who will continue to be based in Charlottesville.
Mumper, a Washington & Lee University grad, joined Patina in May after stints at SunTrust and Xenith Bank, which is now part of Union Bank & Trust.
Harris, who grew up locally and graduated from Clover Hill High, moved to Charlottesville six years ago while working for advisory firm TFS Capital, which has offices in Richmond and Pennsylvania.
He struck out on his own, starting from scratch and has since grown the fee-only firm to $24 million in assets under management from about 75 clients.
Harris, 40, said expansion into Richmond has always been on his radar. He finally took the leap with Mumper, 32, who he worked with briefly at TFS and stayed in touch with over the years.
“I knew I wanted to be in Richmond at some point but wasn’t necessarily searching to hire somebody,” Harris said. “I was really concerned about finding somebody that was a really good fit from a personality standpoint.”
While the firm is small and Richmond is a crowded market for investment advisors, Harris said he hopes to tap into his connections from his time living and working here, which also included a run at the former Wachovia Securities.
He said he hopes the firm’s fee model will be a selling point.
“The challenge is finding the right people to tell the story to,” Harris said. “I think people appreciate the independent fee-only approach.”
