The Future Of: The Boulevard

For the latest installment of our newest event series, Richmond BizSense is headed to the epicenter of arguably the largest, most valuable untapped pocket of real estate in the city.

On the evening of May 8, we’ll host The Future Of: The Boulevard, presented by Hourigan, a happy hour panel discussion that will explore the long-debated prospect of redeveloping the city-owned 60 acres around The Diamond.

The event will be held, fittingly, at The Diamond, the linchpin of the site’s potential. The debate over whether the baseball stadium should stay or be built anew elsewhere has been waged since before the arrival of the Richmond Flying Squirrels.

We’re assembling an all-star panel of speakers to lead a lively discussion about how best to use the land, which the city has assessed at around $35 million as is.

Confirmed panelists thus far include:

ParneyTodd “Parney” Parnell, VP and COO of the Richmond Flying Squirrels

His team has patiently waited for the stars to align for a new stadium and Boulevard redevelopment.


McLaughlin Ed

Ed McLaughlin, Director of Athletics at VCU

The school likely would own any new baseball stadium built in the neighborhood and recently began to publicly hint at its interest in a site across from the Diamond.

Gray’s 2nd District includes the land around the Diamond as well as neighboring Scott’s Addition.

What does the City envision???? Well I am sure Kim has some good ideas but the question should be what does the Stoney administration, aka our City executive, plan for the site. The answer is a “no comment” aka NOTHING! My fear is that after say 2023 when the Squirrels and VCU move across the Hermitage Road to what will be then the old ABC site, we will have an empty, blighting Coliseum and an empty, blighting minor league stadium.

Sadly, your panelists can only speculate. The new dcao for development appears to have been brought in to get that project moving, but Ms. Ebert is not on your panel.

Im still waiting for the courtesy of a reply from the last RFP answer we filed on this site 2 years ago! Maybe with Kim Gray involved we can get this underutilized parcel generating significant tax revenues for the schools. Kim Gray for mayor!
