The coronavirus downturn is pushing another local retailer into permanent closure.

La Grande Dame at 5712 Grove Ave. will close its doors for good on Saturday after 30 years in business. Owner Art Toth said he’s retiring, a move prompted by the economic disruptions of the coronavirus pandemic.

“(The store’s closing is) due to what’s going on in the current environment,” Toth said. “The last six months have been difficult.”

La Grande Dame sells women’s plus-size clothing, with products coming by way of designers such as Lafayette 148, Eileen Fisher and Fridaze, among others. The store originally opened in Stony Point Shopping Center and moved to Grove Avenue 20 years ago.

The effects of the pandemic have been particularly disruptive for the retail sector both locally and nationally. It has rippled elsewhere through the Grove Avenue corridor, with Starbucks leaving its space at 5802 Grove Ave. in April.

Bliss at 5812, another women’s clothing store, closed its Grove Avenue storefront in March to focus on online sales.
