A new fast-casual restaurant is en route to Manchester.
Red Hibachi & Beer is preparing to open at 1011 Hull St.
Behind the restaurant are Lamarr Johnson, co-owner of nearby barbecue joint Pig & Brew, along with former Plush and Main Stage owner Juan Wilson and Clayton Navarre, who formerly co-owned Fan eatery Poor Boys of RVA.
Johnson said that the bowls on Red Hibachi & Beer’s menu will include fried rice, vegetables and proteins cooked on flat-top, hibachi-style grills, and that recipes are being developed for a half-dozen different sauces to top each bowl. He said the restaurant seeks to offer something a bit different for the area.
“I think it’s going to be a little bit different from what we see on the East Coast, it’s more like a West Coast-style (restaurant),” Johnson said. “It’ll be fast-casual but with the quality of a sit-down restaurant.”
Red Hibachi will have a small seating area, but Johnson said the plan is for it to be primarily a carry-out establishment. He said the restaurant is also seeking an ABC license to be able to offer beer and wine.
Johnson’s group is leasing the roughly 1,500-square-foot space from local developer Kelvin Hanson, who has owned the building since the mid-2000s.
Johnson said the hope is to open sometime in the next month.
The new restaurant will be just a few blocks down the street from Pig & Brew, which Johnson opened in 2018. He said that Red Hibachi is one of many restaurant ideas he’s had, and that he felt it made the most sense to put it in Manchester.
“The area has developed way beyond what I could’ve imagined five years ago,” Johnson said. “I have a book of concepts I’m going to do. It’s just timing and finding the right locations.”

Considering how awesome the food is it at Pig and Brew, I can’t wait to try this new place.
Even just hearing the name I think I need to run get a peach cobbler
And now I know who to curse when it is out when we go for a later dinner services after 7:15. Although usually stuffed after some pork, collards and cornbread.
All I can do is applaud this! We can’t wait to eat here. All this part of Hull is missing is a few rooftop spots.
