After losing part of its Richmond attorney team to one rival, a Baltimore-based law firm is reconstituting its local ranks by poaching attorneys from two other competitors.
Miles & Stockbridge last week added seasoned attorneys Stephanie Lipinski Galland and Carl Schwertz from Williams Mullen and Hunton Andrews Kurth, respectively.
The new additions coincide with Miles & Stockbridge’s move into its new, larger Richmond office in Riverfront Plaza’s West Tower.
The 11,000-square-foot, ninth-floor space is about double its previous local office in Truist Center and is aimed at helping the firm lure additional Richmond talent after it lost an attorney trio led by longtime commercial and construction litigator Tom Wolf to O’Hagan Meyer in April. Wolf’s group helped open Miles & Stockbridge’s Richmond office four years ago.
Now back up to four partners in Richmond, John Badman IV, newly named managing principal of Miles & Stockbridge’s Richmond office, said the firm’s local recruiting efforts are far from over.
“It could be very quickly seven to 10,” Badman said. “We’re in conversations with many folks. We can be patient and find the right folks and when we find them we can be very aggressive.”
Lipinkski Galland joins as a principal in the firm’s corporate and securities practice and brings more than 30 years of experience. She represents businesses on tax issues and other matters. She had been with Williams Mullen since 2001.
Schwertz, who had been with Hunton since 2020, returns for his second tour with Miles & Stockbridge. He had previously been with the firm from 2010 to 2020. He brings a 35-year litigation practice representing clients in product liability, mass toxic tort and commercial and catastrophic personal injury defense.
Nancy Greene, chairman, president and CEO of Miles & Stockbridge, said their additions should also help in growing the tax and litigation practice areas.
“(Schwertz) helps us in the sense that we want to bring in more litigators to our Richmond office,” Greene said. “(Lipinski Galland) is a huge pickup for us because it’s an area we’ve wanted to grow.”
Miles & Stockbridge now has 177 attorneys firmwide, though that’s down from around 230 when it first expanded into Richmond in 2019.
In addition to the Richmond office, the firm has four outposts in Maryland, one in D.C. and one in Northern Virginia.
It posted gross revenue in 2022 of $125.79 million, which the firm said is the second-highest revenue in its history.
Greene said it’s a ripe market for continued recruiting, but also a competitive one.
“It’s a good time in the sense that COVID has passed, so more people are open to the idea and looking around, but more law firms are doing exactly what we’re doing,” she said.
