Two local staffing firms join forces in ‘really good marriage’

Kevin Tortoriello wasn’t looking to acquire another company.

But when he and brother TJ, who co-own Adapt Staffing Agency in Midlothian, were introduced to Myra Griffin by a mutual friend in early March, a deal came together quickly.

“It was love at first sight,” said Griffin, who sold her Richmond-based Community Staffing business to the Tortoriello brothers. “It was like giving my baby up to somebody. I knew it was going to a good home.”

Adapt Staffing Agency acquired Community Staffing in April for an undisclosed sum.

Both firms focus on placing temporary and permanent workers at local companies, such as manufacturers and call centers.

Kevin Tortoriello, who serves as Adapt’s CEO, said the acquisition is “a really good marriage.”

“They have some strong grassroots, a community approach to recruiting that is really fundamental in growing a staffing company and also in supplying good people,” Tortoriello said of Community Staffing.

He added that the acquisition has brought more energy to Adapt, which he and TJ founded in 2001. Since Adapt took over Community Staffing in late April, Tortoriello said the company’s people on assignment — the number of people placed in jobs — has more than doubled. Adapt is now placing about eight people a week into employment, and averages around 400 placements in a year. And his own staff has grown from three employees to nine, with a goal to hire two more by the end of the year.

Tortoriello said revenue also has doubled with the acquisition but declined to give specifics.

Griffin said when the Tortoriellos approached her about buying her business, she welcomed the idea. Although she just started the company in February 2022, she’d been in the staffing industry for 30 years. Now, she’s putting the majority of her effort toward Community Transportation, a business she runs that provides free rides to work for eligible low-income individuals.

Community Transportation is funded by a $279,000 grant from the Virginia Transit Association and works in partnership with the City of Richmond.

Griffin said that while she’ll stay on with Adapt as a consultant, she’ll also work to connect Adapt’s workers with rides to their jobs through the program.

“In order to help people get work, they have to get to work,” Griffin said.

Adapt has yet to change the sign on the door but will keep Community Staffing’s location at 422 E. Franklin St. downtown in addition to its own Southside office at 9840 Midlothian Turnpike.
