The recent spurt of activity at a Willow Lawn retail strip continues with the impending arrival of an out-of-town taqueria.
D.C.-area chain Taco Bamba is planning to open its first local outpost in the shopping center in early 2024.
The restaurant has claimed an end space in Willow Lawn’s eastern strip, which is undergoing a transformation to make room for beauty supplies store Ulta and discount store Five Below. The two retailers are taking over storefronts once occupied by Dollar Tree and Ledo Pizza, among others.
Taco Bamba’s future space is suite 400, which was previously home to Pie Five Pizza Co. Local taqueria TBT El Gallo once eyed the same spot for an expansion, but those plans ultimately didn’t materialize.
For Taco Bamba, the space is expected to have seating for 50 to 60 diners indoors as well as a new-construction patio for 15 to 20 people, according to spokesman Justin Rude. He said in an email last week the restaurant’s design work is still underway and a project budget hasn’t been finalized.
Gage Construction is the general contractor on the project, and 308 Design is the project’s architecture firm.
The restaurant’s tacos are expected to cost $4 to $5. Things like quesadillas and enchiladas will be about $8, while tortas will range $12 to $16, according to Rude.
The company plans to have 35 to 40 employees at its local outpost.
Taco Bamba was founded a decade ago by Victor Albisu. The chain has nine locations in Northern Virginia and Maryland.
The company has near-term plans to open restaurants in Raleigh, Nashville and D.C., in addition to the planned Willow Lawn outpost, according to a news release.
In addition to Ulta and Five Below, Taco Bamba’s neighbors in the retail strip will include burger joint Five Guys and shoe seller DSW.
Willow Lawn’s major tenants are Kroger and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Other Willow Lawn tenants include Old Navy, a J.Crew outlet store, craft store Michael’s and IHOP.
In other restaurant news in the neighborhood, the property across Broad Street from Willow Lawn that’s home to a Chick-fil-A restaurant recently changed hands.

We are in for a treat with this one. A must visit on any trip to DC/MD area.
People in the DMV love this place. I think it’s meh for the RVA food scene. Great location though.
Meh for RVA? Lol. This is one of the best food additions to the existing “meh” food landscape that currently blankets the vast majority of the area.
No Sure if meh is right word, but we are just trading quick service burritos for quick service taco’s.
any word on the rumored Trader Joes coming across from the Willow Lawn Target?
The mystery grocery? That space is about twice the size of a trader joes.
