Local juice bar The Pit and The Peel has shut down its location in the region’s busiest mall after a four-year run.
Co-owner Craig Brosius said the chain made the decision to close its Short Pump Town Center spot about a month ago. It had been in the 1,400-square-foot space next to Athleta since March 2019.
“The seasonality was too hard to manage. It was weather-dependent,” Brosius said of the open-air mall. “It was a break-even store for us. Whatever money we made during good weather, we lost during bad weather.”
Brosius said they were able to shuffle some of the Short Pump staff to The Pit and The Peel’s recently opened location at Westhampton Commons, at Libbie and Patterson avenues.
The company also has locations on West Main Street near VCU and in the James Center downtown, as well as one in Norfolk.
It’s the second food option at Short Pump Town Center to close this year, following Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery’s closure in the spring after nine years in the mall.

I would love to see a joint venture with a local brewery.
Exactly. How does the West End not have a brewery outpost from the Veil or Triple Crossing? Every other side of town does.
Outrageous Rents, gotta sell a lotta pints……….
what are the leases out there, probably too expensive
While I wish anyone the best, their Jamestown Center location also seems to be shuttering. They’ve cut their menu options down drastically and the prices are honestly absurd. Chick-fil-A is doing them no favors being next door.
I have noticed this as well (James Center). The overrated and over priced chic-fulla appears to have cut into this store’s business, unfortunately. I like the the P&P fruit drinks but they have cut back on the selection.
We ate at Rock Bottum months ago and to be honest I would never go there again. I don’t know if it was the location but the service and the food were not at a level that I would pay for again.
