The primary care subsidiary of a health insurance giant recently opened two outposts in the Richmond area, with a third local clinic slated to open early next year.
CenterWell Senior Primary Care, which is owned by Humana, is now operating at 4722 S. Laburnum Ave. in Henrico and at 6900 Midlothian Turnpike in the city of Richmond.
Aimed at senior patients, CenterWell clinics feature wide hallways, wheelchair-accessible weight scales, chairs that can be converted into exam tables and other elements designed to accommodate elderly people. The primary care clinics offer both in-person and telehealth services, in addition to on-site labs and community centers.
The CenterWell on Laburnum Avenue occupies a 5,600-square foot space in a shopping center near White Oak Village in eastern Henrico. It shares the center with Mattress Firm and a Sheltering Arms Institute clinic that expanded last year.
CenterWell’s Midlothian Turnpike clinic is situated in a 5,000-square-foot space that was formerly home to LoanMax near the city’s border with Chesterfield County.
Both clinics opened in mid-October. CenterWell expects to hold a grand-opening ceremony for the Midlothian Turnpike clinic today (Wednesday) and a grand opening for the Laburnum Avenue location tomorrow, according to a Humana spokeswoman. The grand-opening events run 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day and will feature tours of the centers.
CenterWell clinics in Virginia are staffed by physicians, nurse practitioners and medical assistants. The company also employs pharmacists, social workers and behavioral health specialists.
The local clinics accept both Humana and non-Humana insurance plans, per the company’s website.
A third CenterWell is still to come in the Richmond area at 8191 Brook Road in the Parham One shopping center. That location is expected to open in mid-January.
CenterWell’s entry into the Richmond market comes amid larger expansion plans into primary care by Humana.
The insurance company also owns a primary care clinic concept called Conviva Care Center, which is also focused on seniors, and between the two brands operated about 300 clinics in 15 states as of late September. Humana plans to expand by 30 to 50 new primary care centers annually through 2025, per a news release.
CenterWell is working on an eight-unit expansion into Virginia. In addition to the two Richmond area clinics currently operational, CenterWell also opened locations in Chesapeake, Hampton and Norfolk this year, according to the Humana spokeswoman.
In 2024 CenterWell outposts are planned to open in Portsmouth and Newport News, in addition to the Brook Road location in Henrico.
The expansion of CenterWell is fueled by a joint venture between Humana and private equity firm Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe. The private equity firm has a majority stake in the venture, while Humana has a minority stake and handles management of the clinics.
Humana also offers home-based care and pharmacy services under the CenterWell brand.
