Yellow Umbrella Provision’s expansion to Scott’s Addition is expected to come to fruition in the next couple months.
Co-owner Thomas Brown and his brother Tucker are planning to open a new restaurant, called Slack Tide Fish Co., and a new Yellow Umbrella market location this spring in the former Blue Bee Cider building at 1320 Summit Ave.
Slack Tide will be a seafood and raw bar concept taking shape in the compound of cobblestone buildings at the corner of Summit Avenue and West Clay Street. Brown said they hope to open the restaurant in late April or May.
“It’s going to be really cool. We’re very excited to be in Scott’s Addition. It’s such a thriving area,” he said. “There will be a heavy emphasis on seafood but we’ll also do other stuff too.”
Slack Tide is expected to follow the opening of the new Yellow Umbrella location, which will sell prepared foods, seafood, meats, wine, beer and other items on the same property. Also planned for the overall venue, which the Browns are calling Ballast, is a tasting room to be operated by local distillery Cirrus Vodka.
J.M. Scott Construction is the Ballast development’s general contractor, and 510 Architects was tapped to handle the design of the project.
Brown said the vision for the property is still being fine-tuned. He said he hopes to see the concepts evolve over time and for the property to eventually host events.
“We want it to be a fun space for people to come hang out. As we go along, we’ll probably figure out some more things that will complement the space and the area better,” he said.

The Browns acquired the property in late 2022, and initial plans were revealed in mid-2023. The property was formerly occupied by Blue Bee Cider, which relocated to 4811 Bethlehem Road.
“We’re chomping at the bit to get going,” Brown said.
The Scott’s Addition project comes as Yellow Umbrella recently inked a lease on additional office space across the street from its flagship store at 5603 Patterson Ave.
The company has secured a 1,000-square-foot space in the Post Office Square shopping center. Brown said the space would add to an existing office at the store across the street to better support the company’s operations.
“We have a small office in the back of Patterson and we have too many moving pieces and people to get in there and do the work we need,” he said. “It should be a two-person office and sometimes we have six people in there.”
Brown said moving into the space is a bit of a full-circle moment for the company, which years ago used the same space for a kitchen facility.
The second-story office is the C suite at 5602 Patterson Ave. Other tenants at the center include running store Fleet Feet and Ariya Chiropractic. Jim Ashby and Reilly Marchant of Thalhimer represented the landlord in lease negotiations.
Brown bought Yellow Umbrella in 2020, and his brother Tucker later came on as a co-owner and to help handle operations of the business, which dates to the 1980s. In early 2024, Yellow Umbrella opened a location at the Libbie Mill development.

Overpriced. You guys getting sucked in and we laugh.
My mom used to buy crabmeat from Mr. Whitby when he parked on the side of Patterson with his cooler and…yellow umbrella. The Browns have done a fabulous job keeping up with the level of quality and expanding the meats and prepared foods. I’m looking forward to a cocktail and oysters at their new place in the Spring.
