After their former employer closed up shop in Scott’s Addition, two local fitness trainers have headed east to strike out on their own.
Baylor Conde and David Kim, who previously worked at the recently shuttered Summit Fitness at 3308 W. Clay St., last month opened Beyond Fit at 1710 E. Broad St. in Shockoe Bottom, along with business partner Connor Sweeney.
Conde and Kim both studied exercise science at VCU and met while working as personal trainers at Summit Fitness. Conde said they were offered a chance to take over the former Summit space as it was closing, but instead opted to lease the 2,200-square-foot storefront, near the intersection of North 17th and East Broad.
The building previously housed a CrossFit gym.
Broker Elliot Warsof of S.L. Nusbaum represented them in the lease negotiations.
Beyond Fit offers group classes and one-on-one personal training, which Conde and Kim lead.
“Our (class) style is a hybrid. We combine the principles of strength and conditioning, circuit training and functional movement, and put it in a high-intensity format,” Conde said.
The gym is mostly open and has plenty of dumbbells, barbells and kettlebells, though Kim was clear about what the gym is not.
“When people see the open gym with lots of free weights, they think it’s a CrossFit gym, but that’s not us,” Kim said. “You’re not going to see any machines in there. It’s all free weights.”
Beyond Fit’s classes max out at 10 people, and they have about four classes each day, with plans to increase to six.
The gym’s membership packages include unlimited classes that start at $100 per month.
Conde said Beyond Fit aims to cater to people of all fitness levels.
“The idea is fitness should be accessible for everyone,” Conde said. “We had people from ages 21 to 60 at our grand opening, and had a football player from Christopher Newport University and a former NFL player.”
Beyond Fit joins Boho Cycle Studio as the latest locally owned gym to open in the eastern side of town in recent months.
