A new retail shop with a nostalgic streak has opened in Jackson Ward.
Pop City opened March 21 at 106 W. Broad St., operated by owners and engaged couple Tiffany Browning and Keith Goldsmith.
In addition to clothing, Pop City is filled with retro memorabilia, including an Andre Agassi poster, first-generation iMac computers, Super Nintendo games, and cassette and VHS tapes.
“It’s ’70s, ’80s and ’90s pop culture nostalgia. We want it to feel fun, like when you come in, you’ll recognize something from (those eras),” Browning said.
The couple also own Museum District hair salons Belle & Beau Co. and Meridian Hair at 407 Cleveland St. and 112 N. Sheppard St., respectively.
They previously operated a clothing boutique called Commonwealth Vintage in a space connected to Belle & Beau. They said when they found the Broad Street space, they jumped at it because it gave them more space to expand upon the Commonwealth Village theme. Meanwhile, they have incorporated the Commonwealth Village space into Belle & Beau.
“Commonwealth Vintage was more or less a place, at the beginning, for hair clients to come and look around,” Goldsmith said. “We didn’t think the opportunity to have a standalone shop would happen so quickly.”
“We’re converting it into more space for the salon for hair classes. My dream, because it is pretty open, is to have a small yoga class for hairstylists,” Browning said.
Pop City is leasing the 750-square-foot space. Ann Schweitzer Riley of One South Commercial brokered the deal.
Browning and Goldsmith said they often travel and hit up thrift shops on the road.
“We take pride in what we put in here. We found a lot of the stuff ourselves,” she said.
Pop City is next door to candy shop A Secret Forest, which opened last summer. Also nearby is kids’ clothing shop Little Nomad and men’s consignment store It’s A Man’s World.
