As Chesterfield County’s population expands, so too does Bon Secours’ Midlothian hospital.
The health system plans to construct a two-story addition onto the existing St. Francis Medical Center. The $108 million expansion will add 55 acute-care beds and nearly 110,000 square feet of new space to the hospital’s main facility.
At the conclusion of construction, which is slated for early 2024, the hospital will have the capacity for 185 acute-care beds.
The project would also include 10 new observation beds and renovate about 70,000 square feet of existing facilities.
The hospital is expected to add another 100 employees to its current 1,000-person workforce, Bon Secours spokeswoman Jenna Green said in an email.
The project architect is Gresham Smith. The general contractor is Skanska and the engineer is WSP. The health system planned to hold a ceremony to mark the start of construction Monday evening.
In its announcement of the project, Bon Secours said there was a need to expand its Midlothian hospital to keep up with Chesterfield’s population growth as well as the requirements of increasingly complex inpatient services, particularly for people 65 and older.
Chesterfield’s population was pegged at about 365,000 people in 2020, according to census data. That headcount is 15 percent higher than the county’s population in 2010.
The expansion will take shape during the construction of a new surgery center and medical office at the hospital’s campus. Planned for several years, the three-story, 90,000-square-foot facility is expected to start construction next year and wrap up in 2023.
For that project, the architect is Gresham Smith and the general contractor is Kjellstrom and Lee.
A budget figure is still being hashed out for the new building, Green said. She added that construction was delayed due to the pandemic.
Bon Secours broke ground on a $30 million, 11-bed emergency care center in Chester in the spring. That facility, which will be the health system’s fourth freestanding emergency center in the Richmond area, is expected to open next year.

Let’s hope this includes a parking structure, they opened with inadequate parking (it’s only gotten worse over the years).
