Check counterfeiters have gone after Franklin Federal Savings Bank in Glen Allen, according to an alert sent out today by the FDIC.
The $995 million bank contacted the FDIC to report counterfeit cashier’s checks bearing its name are circulating, when in fact Franklin Federal does not actually issue cashier’s checks.
Franklin Federal has eight branches in the Richmond area and its corporate headquarters in Innsbrook.
Virginia Company Bank in Newport News also reported counterfeit checks in circulation bearing its name today.
An alert from the FDIC says the Franklin Federal counterfeit checks do bear an actual routing number that is registered to the bank. But the appearance of the checks has glaring differences compared to the real thing.
Here’s the description from the FDIC alert of the counterfeit checks:
The counterfeit items are light blue with a star design background. A security feature statement is embedded in a darkened top border and along the bottom border between two padlock icons. The words “CASHIER’S CHECK” and “MEMBER FDIC” are displayed near the top-right corner. Fields for “CHECK DATE,” “CHECK NUMBER” and “CHECK AMOUNT” appear within a box on the right side. The statement “VOID IF NOT CASHED IN 90 DAYS” appears above the box.
Now here’s how authentic Franklin Federal checks should appear:
Authentic checks are speckled gray/blue on a white background. The bank logo (a gold column), name, address and telephone number are in the top-left corner. A security feature statement is embedded within a darkened top border. The check number is printed in red. The statement “Over $25,000.00 TWO SIGNATURES REQUIRED” appears above two signature lines in the lower-right corner.
