A new eatery has anchored itself in Richmond’s canal area.
Restaurateurs Jake Crocker and Hayden Fisher had a grand opening this month for their second F.W. Sullivan’s. The restaurant, on the ground floor of the Troutman Sanders building at 1001 Haxall Point, is the duo’s sixth.
The 7,500-square-foot space sat vacant for a year after the BlackFinn closed in May 2012. Crocker said he was persuaded to sign the lease back in May when he saw momentum building around the space.
“The investment in the Locks and city’s commitment of $2 million to build [a pedestrian] bridge put us over the top,” he said. “And the eagerness of the building owners got us, too.”
Construction began in June. Crocker would not discuss the cost of launching the restaurant. He said he’s hired 40 to 50 employees for the new location.
The new F.W. Sullivan’s joins Casa del Barco and Southern Railway Taphouse as the latest bar and restaurants to set up shop near the canal.
“Richmond needed a ‘go’ point on its Monopoly board,” Crocker said. “And we feel it’s all coming together here on the Canal.”
The new F.W. Sullivans adds to Crocker’s local holdings. He and various partners also own Jorge’s Cantina on North Robinson Street, Lady N’Awlins Cajun Café, the original F.W. Sullivan’s and Uptown Market & Deli, all in the Fan. A third F.W. Sullivan’s in Fredericksburg closed down in July.
