Two local automotive groups are rolling into one with a plan to build a large new Southside dealership in the works.

Capital Auto Group of Richmond has been merged into Haley Automotive Group, creating a company with a combined 11 dealerships. The move marks Haley’s second drive toward expansion in the past seven months.

As part of the deal, Haley acquired an interest in Capital’s dealerships, including Capital Chevrolet-GMC in Powhatan, Capital Buick-GMC and Capital Chrysler Jeep Dodge on Laburnum Avenue.

“It gives us a geographic diversity,” Doug Pridgen, president of Haley Automotive Group, said of the deal.

Capital’s Chevy dealership in Powhatan will be replaced with a 40,000-square-foot location to be built on 14.4 acres on Hull Street Road, near Memphis Boulevard in Midlothian, Pridgen said. That plan is awaiting approval from the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors.

Haley Automotive Group includes Volvo of Richmond on West Broad Street; Volvo of Midlothian, Haley Toyota Scion, Haley Certified, and Haley Buick-GMC of Midlothian; Haley Ford on Jefferson Davis Highway; Haley Auto Mall in Farmville; and Haley Toyota Scion in Roanoke.

The company acquired the two Volvo dealerships in June.

The three Capital locations will keep their names for now but will eventually take on the Haley name, Pridgen said.

George Poulos, Capital’s president and owner, will retain a stake in Haley Automotive Group, the companies said in a news release.

Poulos “has decided it would be advantageous to the company, his employees and customers to become a part of the Haley Automotive Group of stores,” the release said.

Poulos did not respond for comment by press time.

The Powhatan dealership will not close until the new store opens, and employees will be transferred. Pridgen said they haven’t decided what to do with the building in Powhatan once it is vacant.
