The usual gang of companies represented the Richmond market in the latest Fortune 500 list, released Monday by Fortune magazine.
Altria Group, Dominion Resources, CarMax, Genworth Financial, Owens & Minor and MeadWestvaco once again appeared on the annual list, which ranks America’s largest corporations by annual revenue from the most recent year. These half dozen firms have each been among the Fortune 500 since at least 2007.
Five of the six Richmond-based companies on the list dropped in the rankings.
Altria is Richmond’s highest ranked Fortune 500 firm this year. The tobacco giant holds the 161 spot, down from 159 last year. Its revenue for the year was $17.66 billion, up 0.9 percent, according to Fortune.
Richmond’s king of electricity, Dominion Resources, earned the ranking of 212 in this year’s list with revenue of $13.42 billion, up 2.1 percent. It was ranked 210 last year.
CarMax was the third-highest ranked local company, coming in at number 240. The used car retailer was the only local company to see its ranking increase this year, moving up 19 spots from last year. That was based on revenue of $11.45 billion, up 9.6 percent.
Mortgage insurer Genworth Financial is ranked 291 on this year’s list, down 20 spots. Its revenue was $9.61 billion, down 4.1 percent, according to Fortune.
Owens & Minor dropped six spots to 303 out of 500. Its revenue was $9.07 billion, up 1.8 percent.
Downtown-based packaging giant MeadWestvaco earned the ranking of 457, down from 448 last year. That followed a drop in revenue of 0.9 percent to $5.54 billion
Twenty companies headquartered in Virginia made the list.
Northern Virginia-based Freddie Mac was the highest ranked company from the Commonwealth at number 32, down one spot from 2013.
Other Virginia companies of note on the list included McLean-based Capital One, Richmond’s largest employer. It held the 124th spot on the Fortune list, up from 127.
Walmart, Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Berkshire Hathaway and Apple were the list’s top five. Check out the full list here.
