Two local firms beefed up their ranks outside of Richmond this week with expansions around the Southeast.

Virginia Asset Management, one of Richmond’s largest financial planning firms, and local accounting giant Cherry Bekaert, each announced additions to their rosters in North Carolina and Florida, respectively.

Virginia Asset Management made its first push into the Charlotte, N.C., market by picking up Ryan Schachtner from larger national firm Northwestern Mutual.

Schachtner  will lead the charge to grow the firm’s Charlotte office that company CEO Mike White said could become a Carolina home base.

“It gives us a natural spot for another hub which will service our other Carolina offices,” said White, who founded the firm in Richmond 28 years ago.

With $1.2 billion in assets under management, Virginia Asset Management is among the top financial planning firms headquartered in Richmond.

Schachtner brings with him a team of about six, and the company has about 100 financial advisors firm-wide who work as independent contractors. About 65 of those are local, White said.

The move into Charlotte follows the firm’s first push into North Carolina through a merger in 2012. That deal gave it a presence in Pinehurst and Fayetteville.

It will next look to the Raleigh-Durham market, White said, where the firm is already talking with potential new hires. From there it will look east of Richmond.

“Really the final place we’re focused on is Virginia Beach and the Tidewater area,” White said. “We’re looking to put a big operation down there.”

That move could come in the next 12 months, he said.

“We’re not rushing it,” White said. “We’re looking for the right situation.”

Further south, Cherry Bekaert seized a chance to bring on 25 new employees from the Miami office of competitors CBIZ and Mayer Hoffman McCann after both decided to close their offices in that market.

August Keller, Cherry Bekaert’s chief marketing officer, said the new additions will work out of the firm’s Coral Gables office. That outpost, along with its location in Fort Lauderdale, has around 140 total employees and generates about $30 million in revenue annually, Keller said.

“It’s definitely one of our larger markets,” he said.

Cherry Bekaert now has about 850 total employees. It is in the top five of the largest accounting firms in the Richmond market with more than 100 employees here. Its offices stretch from Northern Virginia to South Florida. Its total annual revenue is around $145 million, Keller said. This is Cherry Bekaert’s second expansion this year after it absorbed a smaller firm in Innsbrook in February.
