The owners of a local ice cream chain are ready start dishing out gelato from their newest location.

Gelati Celesti is set to open a new storefront Thursday at the Corner at Short Pump development at West Broad Street and Lauderdale Drive. It’s the third gelato shop for owners Steve and Kim Rosser.

Steve Rosser said the space is part of parcel just built by Midlothian-based Rebkee Co. earlier this year. Rosser said Fraser Design Associates designed the gelato store using items from Shades of Light and Surface Architectural Supply. THS Construction was the general contractor.

“We’re artisan ice cream – its craft, and we incorporate a lot of craft into the design,” Steve Rosser said. “The key objective was to align the design of the store to our brand.”

The husband-and-wife ice cream sellers have a five-year lease on the 1,275-square-foot space, Steve Rosser said. Their current neighbor in the shopping center’s new section is Zoës Kitchen. A Café Rio Mexican Grill, OshKosh B’gosh, and Carter’s baby clothes store are also in the works for the parcel. The Corner at Short Pump is anchored by a Kroger.

The new Gelati Celesti joins the original shop at 8906 W. Broad St. in the Gold’s Gym Plaza shopping center and a store in the Stony Point shopping center on the Southside. The company was launched in 1984, and the Rossers bought it in 2010.

Ice cream sales don’t typically surge as the temperatures drop, but Steve Rosser sais he isn’t too worried.

“We realize seasonally this is a lower period of sales for us,” Steve Rosser said. “We’re confident we’ll be fine this winter.”
