Triathlete shop pumps the brakes on River Road location

A local bike, swim and run shop is going from two storefronts to one – at least temporarily.

3Sports has closed its location at 6241 River Road in the River Road Shopping Center. It will continue operating its West Broad Village location at 2231 Old Brick Road.

Owner Andy Williams said he hopes the consolidation is temporary.

“After two catastrophic events that were out of our control, we’re forced to recoup, re-evaluate, reduce our footprint, and take refuge in smaller retail space to recover and come back with a vengeance in 2018,” Williams said.

The company’s West Broad Village location, 3Sports Running Co., flooded twice in 2015 from a burst pipe in a hotel pool above. Repairing, renovating and restocking the shop cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, Williams said.

3Sports had been waiting on an insurance settlement since the second flood, but Williams said it wouldn’t cover enough of the repair costs.

“We had no other choice but close the doors on an otherwise profitable, successful business location,” Williams said.

3Sports Running Co. now will house the retailer’s bike and swim inventory, and offer bike repair and maintenance.

Williams said the company had been leasing the space in the River Road Shopping Center, and that he hopes to reopen a second location in 2018.

Andy and his wife, Cori, purchased 3Sports in 2012.

While the company takes refuge in Short Pump temporarily, another Richmond bike shop is taking a more permanent residence there. Carytown Bicycle Co. is preparing to open its third location in GreenGate later this month.
