Some of the building’s 275 apartments will offer a view of the city’s new baseball stadium, as well as eclectic amenities such as a podcast recording studio and a speakeasy that’s hidden behind a moveable bookshelf.
The Capital City Physicians Building is at least the third distressed local office property Gagan Marwaha has snatched up in recent years.
Included in the deal was 398,000 square feet of retail space that’s occupied by tenants like Publix, Burlington and JCPenney. Not included were tenant-owned anchor buildings housing Target, Lowe’s and a T-Mobile call center, as well as outparcels on Laburnum.
The 266-unit project from Tennessee-based developer Elmington has the special-use permit it needs to proceed on a 7-acre site on McDonough Street.
“We’re building a destination, and that’s why we’ve really taken our time,” said Good Ship Brewing’s Donnie Barber. “We’re not really in competition with anybody with this. In Hopewell there’s nothing else around here like this.”
“We’re in growth mode right now,” said local managing director Theresa DeBoer said. ”We want to have more of a presence in Richmond.”
Adrienne and Carlos Londoño are no longer operating Casa Fiesta in Shockoe Slip and Tequila Sunrise in Chesterfield, as they eye something new for the old City Dogs space downtown.
Toast is the lone full-service restaurant at Scott’s Walk, joining other tenants including Raising Cane’s, Starbucks, Chipotle and Marco’s Pizza.
Walter Parks, Richard Smith and Malcome Sargent have filed plans for a 112-unit building at 1501-1511 Hull St.
