Arizona hits Richmond lab firm with hefty fine

bostwicklabsAn Innsbrook-based medical lab company was slapped with a fine by Arizona state officials last week after hazardous waste violations were found at its Tempe location.

Bostwick Laboratories, which has had a lab in Tempe since 2006, agreed to pay a $129,900 civil penalty as a result of numerous violations, according to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and the state’s attorney general’s office.

The penalty is a result of findings from a hazardous waste inspection of Bostwick’s Tempe lab in February 2010 that found a number of violations related to a lack of training, emergency planning, and records keeping related to its dealings with hazardous waste.

Bostwick, which specializes in tests that help detect cancer, also didn’t properly mark certain hazardous waste containers on site and shipped hazardous waste without obtaining a required ID number from the EPA.

The company also hadn’t properly registered with the state’s department of environmental quality, or filed proper reports or paid any required fees to the state agency since Bostwick expanded to Tempe in 2006, according to the AEDQ release.

“This lack of management of hazardous waste put employees and the community at risk,” ADEQ Director Henry Darwin said in a prepared statement. “Agreeing to pay this sizeable penalty is an acknowledgement of the severity of the situation.”

This is not the first time Bostwick has been in the news recently.

BizSense reported in early June that Bostwick’s 65,000 square foot corporate headquarters in Innsbrook went up for lease. Its other location on Lake Brook Drive is being taken over by Snagajob in October.

Bostwick’s Tempe lab has been up for sale for some time and lab functions there ceased last fall.

Bostwick agreed to the penalty in Arizona as part of a consent judgment that is still subject to court approval.

In addition to its Richmond and Arizona locations, Bostwick has labs in Uniondale, N.Y., Silver Spring, Md., Orlando, London and El Paso, Texas.
