The earth is moving once again at a long-dormant plot of land near Staples Mill Road and Libbie Avenue.

Construction crews this month began to make way for Libbie Mill, a planned 80-acre mixed-use project by Richmond developer Gumenick Properties.

Bounded by Bethlehem Road, Staples Mill Road and Libbie Avenue, the property will eventually include 1,000 houses, 1,100 apartments, 50,000 square feet of office space and 150,000 square feet of retail space. That will include a 53,000-square-foot store for high-end grocer Southern Season.

Crews are clearing land in the southeast corner of the development, where the grocery store will sit. Southern Season is expected to be up and running by mid-2014.

It’s the first action at the property in more than a decade, since an apartment complex on the site was demolished.

The property’s roads will be completely reconfigured, and a lake will be dug out near its center.

Libbie Mill will be built over 10 years. The developer has not released an estimate of the total development costs.

CBRE is handling the leasing for the retail and office portions.
