A planned Walmart grocery development has taken a $2 million step forward in Henrico County.

MVG Development bought the Virginia Inn motel at 5221 Brook Road for $2.19 million last week. The Colorado-based firm has plans to demolish the 102,000-square-foot hotel and build a new Walmart Neighborhood Market.

Construction will begin on the site this month and Walmart expects the store will open early next year. The grocery store will take up about 42,000 square feet at the 6.2-acre site. A development plan submitted to Henrico County in May also shows a detached fuel station.

It’s unclear whether MVG will sell or lease the finished product to the retail giant. H McNeish, MVG’s director of development, did not return email and phone messages asking for comment on the deal by Thursday afternoon.

The Brook Road Neighborhood Market is one of several Walmart Neighborhood markets currently in the works around Richmond. MVG has plans for another 42,000-square-foot grocery with a fuel station at Chesterfield’s Watermark Town Center, but Walmart has not yet confirmed that the grocery store will be a Neighborhood Market.

A Walmart Neighborhood Market will also anchor a renovated Meadowbrook Shopping Center on Hopkins Road in Chesterfield.
