A Hanover County grocery store has officially been supersized.
The new Kroger Marketplace opened its doors Wednesday in the Rutland Commons Shopping Center after the Ohio-based grocery completed a project that expanded the store from 74,000-square-feet to 114,767 square feet.
The location at 9351 Atlee Road is the third Marketplace store Kroger has opened in the Richmond market. It was the first time an existing Kroger store in the mid-Atlantic region had been transformed into the larger Marketplace concept.
Kroger invested $11 million in the project and construction took around 11 months. The store remained open during that time. RW Smith was the general contractor.
Carl York, a Kroger spokesperson, said customers in the area requested the store’s expansion.
“Customers knew we had the Marketplace, and they wanted it,” York said. “This is a great store, it’s doing well, and it needed the expansion.”
Kroger Marketplace stores include traditional groceries while also stocking clothing and home décor items.
The Rutland Commons location features a Murray’s cheese shop, a Little Clinic that staffs nurse practitioners and a Starbucks kiosk.
The expansion allowed the store to increase its staff by about 60 employees.
Kroger has been expanding its presence in the competitive Richmond grocery market in recent years. A Marketplace store opened earlier this year on Staples Mill Road in Henrico County and construction is underway on another new Marketplace in Chesterfield County.
