Local fitness venture outgrows the garage

A veteran of both the U.S. Navy and local fitness scene is starting a new set in Henrico.

Matt Bahen this month opened S3E Performance Fitness, a new gym at 8002 Staples Mill Road offering group CrossFit-like classes as well as personal training.

Bahen started S3E in early 2017, training people in his garage.

“We did some group classes but only had space to fit like four people in there,” Bahen said. “It was at the beginning of this year that I set my goal to be out of the garage by the end of the year.”

Bahen leased 2,700 square feet in Northgate Center to open S3E in a proper home.

Bahen is a Navy veteran and previously was a co-owner of Scott’s Addition-based CrossFit Full Circle before selling his stake in 2016.

“For me personally, it was to spend more time with my then-2-year-old son and go in a little bit of a slightly different direction. My passion is in endurance sports, with a background in triathlon,” Bahen said.

S3E, which stands for strength, speed, stamina and endurance, focuses more on aerobic workouts than other CrossFit gyms might, Bahen said.

“One of our themes is incorporating aerobic capacity and endurance sport training, because scientifically you’ll see the benefits it has for you no matter what sport you’re in,” Bahen said.

Bahen and S3E’s other trainer, Megan Tabib, are certified strength and conditioning specialists, and CrossFit trainers.

S3E is running about 20 classes per week and will look to double that in coming months, as well as add to its staff.

Another local fitness company is expanding its footprint in the city limits. Boho Studios is preparing to open its first non-spin studio location at 125-127 W. Brookland Park Blvd. in Northside.
